Top Big 12 football QB prospects in the 2022 NFL Draft
Tyler Shough, Texas Tech
One of the biggest additions out of the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason for any Big 12 program involved the Red Raiders and head coach Matt Wells landing former Oregon Ducks quarterback Tyler Shough. After an up and down 2020 campaign with the Ducks in the PAC-12, Shough put his name in the transfer portal this offseason. He soon after landed with Texas Tech in Lubbock.
There was a lot of promise surrounding the arm talent of Shough once he took over as Oregon’s starting quarterback in place of the Los Angeles Chargers sensational rookie signal caller Justin Herbert. A lot of comparisons between Shough and Herbert in terms of what they bring to the table as an NFL-caliber quarterback made the future of the sophomore look very bright.
Shough wasn’t too shabby for the Ducks last year, but he left a lot of room for improvement. He completed 63.5 percent of his passing attempts in seven games played, good for 1,559 passing yards, an impressive 9.6 adjusted yards per passing attempt, 13 passing touchdowns, and six interceptions. He also added 271 rushing yards last season and two rushing scores.
The raw arm talent of Shough is unquestioned. But occasional bad reads, questionable accuracy, and an ability to read plays under pressure that is still developing, all leave a lot to be desired for Shough. The good news is that he didn’t have all that many turnover-worthy plays last season (roughly five percent of his throws were), and his receivers dropped a lot of catchable balls (more than 10 percent of Shough’s throws fell into this bucket).
Assuming that the Texas Tech offense is a good fit for his skill set, Shough should be able to boost his draft stock next season.
