Texas Football: 3 players whose stock is down post-spring
Anthony Cook, DB
One particular area of emphasis for the Longhorns this offseason was continuing to improve the defensive backfield. Under the direction of former defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash, the Texas secondary actually did start to see some life in its production down the stretch last season. Hopefully, that is a trend that will continue this fall.
A name to watch heading into the fall that is very much battling for a newfound role in the Texas secondary, and one that could involve less playing time for him than in years past is the 6-foot-1 and 185 pound senior defensive back Anthony Cook. This former blue chip recruit has often switched positions in the defensive backfield for the Longhorns, and nothing really stuck thus far.
There was also a time where it looked like Cook could be a permanent solution at the cornerback position, and then at nickelback. But he was never able to solidify a starting spot at either specific position in the secondary. New defensive backs coach has a decision to make this offseason as to whether Cook should be a regular in the defensive back rotation this fall.
Texas looks to have converted wide receiver Brenden Schooler to start at one of the safety spots this fall, and then sophomore Jerrin Thompson at the other. And the equivalent of the nickelback spot for the Longhorns this year looks to be junior Chris Adimora.
Any significant role for Cook in the secondary looks to have faded even further away in spring ball. And with Texas seeing former junior safety Caden Sterns, junior cornerback Jalen Green, and senior safety Chris Brown take their talents either to another program or to the next level, there is a sign of the old guard in this defensive backfield fading away in the near future.
