Earlier in the offseason, there was some looming discussion hanging around who new head coach Steve Sarkisian would be able to flip to join the 2021 and 2022 Texas football recruiting classes. Texas was looking to build off the momentum of bringing in a solid head coaching hire in the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator and reigning Broyles Award winner Sark in the last few months.

Since the time that Sark was originally hired to replace former Texas head coach Tom Herman (specifically on Jan. 2), the Longhorns did see a spike in activity on the recruiting trail. The results out of the NCAA Transfer Portal so far this offseason were promising too.

Texas had numerous additions to the program by way of the transfer portal, and the 2022 class could very well be tops in the Big 12 and top five in the nation when it’s all said and done.

Promising for Steve Sarkisian and Texas football recruiting

Texas now holds commitments from eight prospects in their 2022 class. And according to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. The Longhorns 2021 signing class also finished up in the top 15 in the National Class Rankings after flipping the commitment of the former four-star Michigan Wolverines wide receiver pledge Xavier Worthy last month.

However, the biggest competitor that the Longhorns will face on the recruiting trail out of the Big 12 clearly looks to be the rival Sooners for the 2022 cycle. Oklahoma is usually the biggest foe that the Longhorns face on the recruiting trail (potentially outside of the Texas A&M Aggies). They were a thorn in the side of the Longhorns before, and that is something that Sark must take into account.

With that in mind, here’s a look back at three times OU flipped a key Texas commit in the past five years.
