A lot of momentum is currently building up heading into the summer months for head coach Steve Sarkisian and his already strong 2022 Texas football recruiting class. Texas is nearly up to a double-digit number of commits in their 2022 class, and that marker could arrive soon. Also given that official visit season is about to resume around the college football landscape, Texas could be in for some good summer months on the recruiting trail for their 2022 and 2023 classes.

Sark and the Longhorns already have a good number of official visits scheduled for the summer with top targets in their next two recruiting classes. But the emphasis will be placed on their top targets in the 2022 class at the moment.

Texas is also really looking to build on the momentum they’ve found on the defensive side of the ball of late, with their two latest commits both playing along the defensive line. Their latest commit came from four-star Brophy College Prep strong-side defensive end Zac Swanson.

But we shouldn’t forget about the Longhorns’ more underrated targets for their 2022 class heading into the summer months. Texas still has a long way to go to round out their 2022 class, and there will be some key underrated three and four-star recruits that will help to make this a deep and well-rounded group.

DJ Wesolak regaining a spotlight with the 2022 Texas football recruiting class

One of those names to watch for Sark and the Longhorns on the defensive side of the ball that is an underrated target of their 2022 class is the four-star 6-foot-6 and 230 pound Boonville weak-side defensive end DJ Wesolak.

According to a report from Horns247 on May 10 (paid content), while the Longhorns have fallen behind a bit in the race to stay among the front runners to land a commitment from Wesolak, they do still “remain in the mix” at this point in time. Texas could face an uphill battle to try and schedule an official visit with Wesolak before the 2021 season arrives, but don’t rule them out completely yet.

The reported front runners for Wesolak as of May 10 also include the Miami Hurricanes, USC Trojans, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Clemson Tigers. Other schools to watch include the Oklahoma Sooners, Texas A&M Aggies, Arizona State Sun Devils, Auburn Tigers, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

What’s become clear is that the recruitment of Wesolak is far from over, and it might take the summer to see how his true top finalist schools play out in the end. The two schools that do currently have official visits scheduled with Wesolak for the summer are USC and Miami.

Texas is after Wesolak specifically with new defensive line coach Bo Davis. They sent an offer his way back on Feb. 8, 2021, so they were in the middle of the pack in terms of schools on his offer sheet. Texas is also now one of a whopping nearly 50 schools on Wesolak’s lengthy offer sheet.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions currently show a mixed outlook for where experts are picking the commitment of the Boonville, MO, native Wesolak to land when it’s all said and done. The three schools that have picks in right now are Clemson, Notre Dame, and Arizona State.

But that could all change in the very near future.

Moreover, Wesolak ranks as the nation’s No. 176 2022 high school prospect, No. 10 weak-side defensive end, and No. 3 prospect out of Missouri (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 207 high school prospect, No. 9 weak-side defensive end, and No. 6 prospect out of Missouri.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Texas currently holds eight commits in their 2022 class, with the highest-rated being four-star Klein Cain running back Jaydon Blue.
