Over the weekend, the 2022 Texas football recruiting class essentially got a surprise visit from a top target of theirs at the moment. The ultra elusive and speedy 5-foot-10 and 165 pound four-star Spearman wide receiver Brenen Thompson is one of the newer 2022 targets on Texas’ radar, and they seem to be among his top schools.

According to a report from Horns247 on May 12 (paid content), Thompson got to see Austin for the first time since receiving his Longhorns offer last weekend. Thompson competed in the UIL State Track Meet last weekend, and he was running for Spearman.

Thompson also reportedly got to see the track facilities for the Longhorns and was impressed by what they brought to the table. He also mentioned in this 247Sports piece that he is focused on what colleges appeal to him this summer.

With official visit season about to resume around the college football recruiting landscape next month, making this type of impression can be big for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns. Recruiting a multi-sport athlete like Thompson can also open other doors since the Texas athletic department is so robust. This was a prime example of that.

There’s a pretty fierce competition going on at the moment to win over the interests of Thompson. Texas looks to be trying to get a visit setup with him for the summer. As it stands now, the only official visit that Thompson has scheduled is with head coach Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys on June 9.

Texas is one of three dozen schools on Thompson’s lengthy offer sheet. And some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet are the Texas A&M Aggies, Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Tennessee Volunteers, and USC Trojans.

Thompson would be a fantastic addition to the Longhorns 2022 class. Second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman is after the commitment of Thompson, which would make him the second in this class with this position group.

Moreover, Thompson ranks as the nation’s No. 86 2022 high school prospect, No. 11 wide receiver, and No. 17 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 163 high school prospect, No. 23 wide receiver, and No. 27 prospect out of Texas.
