Yet another big-time target that put his name in the transfer portal from another Big 12 school that was on the Longhorns radar was the former Oklahoma Sooners sophomore point guard De’Vion Harmon. Out of the transfer portal, Harmon decided to take his talents and join the Oregon Ducks in PAC-12 country.

Harmon had a solid stretch run with the Sooners, so it was a tad bit surprising that he put his name in the transfer portal this offseason. But it was likely the retirement of longtime Oklahoma head coach Lon Kruger and the subsequent replacement in the form of Loyola-Chicago head coach Porter Moser that caused him to exit Norman.

A native of Denton, TX, and a former highly touted four-star recruit that Texas did send a scholarship offer to out of high school, Harmon seemed like a good fit with Beard. But he went way out of Big 12 country this offseason.

In the last two seasons with the Sooners, Harmon was solid when healthy. He averaged 12.9 points per game, 3.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.1 steals, and no blocks last season. And Harmon shot 47.7 percent from the field, 33.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 73.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Texas did get some depth help out of the portal this offseason in the form of the addition of Askew. They are also getting a solid trio that includes redshirt junior shooting guard/wing Andrew Jones, junior guard Courtney Ramey, and senior sharpshooting guard Jase Febres, for the 2021-22 season.

Losing Harmon out of the transfer portal shouldn’t hurt too much in the end, but he was a big target for this program at one point in time.
