Texas Football: 3 big QB transfer portal targets to watch this offseason
T.J. Finley, QB
Potentially the most intriguing quarterback target in the transfer portal at the moment for Sark and the Longhorns is the former LSU Tigers freshman signal caller and the sizable 6-foot-6 and 250 pound T.J. Finley. A former LSU starting quarterback and competitor at the Elite 11 Finals back during the 2020 recruiting cycle, Finley still has a lofty ceiling at his next destination.
Texas is reportedly a notable potential landing spot for Finley out of the transfer portal. And it was only back on May 6 that he entered the portal in the first place.
Although his numbers didn’t look great from his true freshman campaign playing in Baton Rouge, Finley did show flashes of brilliance under head coach Ed Orgeron. He also looked to be firmly in the midst of the starting quarterback battle for the Tigers this offseason. But Orgeron didn’t announce the winner of the quarterback post-spring ball in Baton Rouge.
This could mean that Finley was possibly on track to lose out in the quarterback battle with LSU to sophomore Max Johnson. It was Johnson that did give the Tigers a spark down the stretch last season, once he took over as the starter in place of Finley.
Texas was not one of the nearly 20 schools that offered Finley coming out of Ponchatoula High School during the 2020 cycle. But the Alabama Crimson Tide were pursuing Finley hard during his recruitment while Sark was on staff under head coach Nick Saban.
Moreover, Finley ranked as the nation’s No. 499 2020 high school prospect, No. 19 pro-style quarterback, and No. 21 prospect out of Louisiana (247Sports Composite).
Last fall with LSU, Finley registered just south of 1,000 passing yards, five passing touchdowns, five interceptions, just over 30 rushing yards, and one rushing score.
