Jimbo doesn’t believe Texas football and A&M will play for a long time
It seems like a looming discussion each and every offseason. When will the Lone Star Showdown return between Texas football and the rival Texas A&M Aggies?
The answer at the moment looks like that it won’t be anytime soon. At least it won’t be a scheduled non-conference meeting in the regular season between the Longhorns and the Aggies on the gridiron.
Texas and Texas A&M have reignited the Lone Star Showdown in other methods in the last few years, including on the diamond and the hardwood. Knowing that they are facing each other in the regular season now in other profit sports could be a good sign for the future of the reignition of the rivalry on the gridiron.
However, in an interview with KLBJ Radio Austin (confirmed by 247Sports) earlier in the week, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher spoke on the subject of the Lone Star Showdown and its future. Fisher essentially stated that the Longhorns are not on their “radar” in the near future.

It sounds like Fisher is keeping his team focused on the road ahead in the SEC this offseason.
There is the hope that the Longhorns and Aggies could face each other in the postseason. It would be a dream scenario for numerous fans all over the college football landscape to see a Lone Star Showdown matchup in the College Football Playoff, or at least a New Year’s Six Bowl game.
The last time that the Longhorns faced the Aggies on the gridiron was in 2011. Texas won the final meeting in the Lone Star Showdown that season too. The all-time series record in the Lone Star Showdown falls in the Longhorns’ favor 76-37-5.
Texas has its non-conference schedule booked up through the 2026 season. And Texas A&M is booked up through 2024. That would mean it’s at least more than a half-decade until these two could even schedule each other at this point.
There is a meeting with a team from the SEC West on the Longhorns’ non-conference slate for this fall. They travel to face the Arkansas Razorbacks this fall, which is set to take place on Sep. 11. Meanwhile, Texas A&M does not currently have any non-conference games booked against any Big 12 team.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of former head coach Tom Herman. They replaced Herman with Steve Sarkisian as the next Texas head coach back on Jan. 2. Meanwhile, Fisher and the Aggies finished up the 2020 campaign with a record of 9-1 (9-1 SEC).
