News that was somewhat anticipated, but wasn’t known for sure, dropped for the Texas basketball program in the past week. A long-awaited NBA Draft decision from the former elite five-star recruit and hometown product Greg Brown dropped on May 13. The freshman power forward Brown will be taking his talents to the next level with the 2021 NBA Draft class.

There will not be the opportunity for the new Longhorns head coach (formerly of the Texas Tech Red Raiders) Chris Beard to develop Brown. With the decision of Brown now known in the public eye, Beard and the Longhorns can focus on filling his void in the frontcourt rotation.

Brown was a key part of the Longhorns frontcourt rotation last season. The Big 12 All-Freshman Team selection started in all but two of the 26 games he played in with the Longhorns during the 2020-21 campaign. And he averaged 9.3 points per game, 6.2 rebounds, 0.4 assists, 0.6 steals, and 1.0 blocks. Brown shot 42.0 percent from the field, 33.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 70.8 percent from the free-throw line.

Leaving the question mark of how Beard and the Longhorns will fill the depth void of Brown in the rotation, it might be time for this new-look coaching staff to turn to the NCAA Transfer Portal once again. Texas was already one of the busier programs in the Big 12 in the transfer portal this offseason.

They have added the likes of former Kentucky Wildcats freshman guard Devin Askew, Creighton Blue Jays junior forward Christian Bishop, Utah Utes junior forward Timmy Allen, and Vanderbilt Commodores sophomore power forward Dylan Disu, out of the portal already. Could they turn to this route again to find a replacement for Brown?

Here’s a look into four potential transfer portal replacements for the Longhorns to look to this offseason to replace Brown.
