What is definitely a name to watch in the transfer portal at this point of the offseason, as a true hidden gem (at least compared to someone like Jordan Brown), is the former unrated recruit and senior 6-foot-8 and 220 pound power forward Steffon Mitchell. This Sunrise Christian High School product and Wichita, KS, native does have ties back to Big 12 country.

But there were only seven schools that offered the Kansas native out of Sunrise Christian back during the 2017 recruiting cycle. Some of the highlighting schools that offered him out of high school were the North Dakota State Bison, Boston College Eagles, Central Michigan Chippewas, and South Dakota State Jackrabbits.

Boston College was the ultimate victor in the race to land Mitchell’s commitment when it was all said and done. And he gave the Eagles four very solid years of production, and he was even an ACC All-Defensive Team selection on one occasion.

The last two seasons really saw Mitchell breakthrough. Two seasons ago, Mitchell averaged 7.8 points per game, a whopping 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks. And last season, he averaged a career-best 9.1 points per game, 7.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.0 blocks.

A well-rounded game that is consistent night in and night out is what Mitchell could bring to the table for the Longhorns. In what should be the final year of Mitchell’s college career, his presence in the forward rotation would be very different of that of Brown last season for Texas.
