Texas Football: 3 most impressive players no one is talking about
T’Vondre Sweat, DT
When Longhorns fans talk about truly underappreciated players that have made an impact on either side of the ball in their career so far that are still on the roster in 2021, there is no better example than the former three-star recruit and junior defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat. The fact that the efficient and athletic 6-foot-4 and 350 pound Sweat was a three-star recruit at one point just goes to show the value that Texas still found on the trail with him.
Sweat joins a number of Longhorns defensive linemen that could truly breakout to become some of the best in the Big 12 at their respective position groups this fall. Other names to watch include senior Moro Ojomo, and sophomores Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton. It is also important to note that Texas has one of the best nose tackles in the Big 12 returning in 2021 in redshirt junior Keondre Coburn.
Lining up next to Coburn, or at least in rotation with him this fall, could be Sweat. The number of snaps that Sweat took with the Longhorns last year at least increased by more than 100 compared to his freshman campaign. He got nearly 350 snaps, mostly lined up between the gaps, as a defensive tackle.
In his two years playing for Texas so far, Sweat registered 30 career combined tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, three pass breakups, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries. He also has just one missed tackle in his career to date and has more than a dozen additional quarterback pressures. It is notable that all three of his pass breakups in his career were batted balls at the line of scrimmage. His size can be a problem for opposing linemen and quarterbacks.
