A big looming debate involves which head coach between the Texas football program and the in-state rival Texas A&M Aggies will be better in the fall. New Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is pitted up against Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher in this type of debate. Although Texas and Texas A&M aren’t going to face each other on the gridiron this fall, the debate among the two programs continues to rage on year in and year out.

In a weekly roundtable with WJOX FM on May 17, well-known ESPN college football media personality Paul Finebaum commented on the debate between the two major head coaches in this state. Finebaum noted that in regard to the question of who he would take to be the better performing head coach this fall between Sark and Fisher that he feels like it’s a “fairly easy answer” with the Aggies’ skipper.

Paul Finebaum doesn’t have confidence in Texas football HC Steve Sarkisian out of the gates compared to Jimbo Fisher

Finebaum did also state that he does “like Sark a lot”. This set of statements from Finebaum makes it sound like he has optimism for Texas hiring Sark to be their next head coach, but it might take some patience to see the fruits of their labor in terms of success in the win column.

A noted steward of the SEC like Finebaum seems like he would both side with Fisher in this type of debate, and like the hiring of Sark to a big-time Big 12 program like Texas. Sark is the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator/reigning Broyles Award winner. And he was the architect of the offense that won a National Championship last season with the Crimson Tide.

Jimbo also recently commented on the future of the Lone Star Showdown between the Longhorns and Aggies. It doesn’t sound like the Texas A&M head coach sees any intention to make this game happen from the College Station perspective anytime soon.

It was back on Jan. 2 that Texas replaced former fourth-year head coach Tom Herman with Sark. Last season, Texas finished up with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of Herman. They are set to open up the 2021 regular season at home on Sep. 4 against Louisiana.
