Texas Basketball: 3 players set to breakout under new coaching staff
Brock Cunnigham, F
Among the mostly forgotten players for the Longhorns that looks to be returning next season, none is more underappreciated than the former underrated three-star recruit and to-be junior forward Brock Cunningham. The 6-foot-6 and 205 pound Austin, TX, native and former Westlake High School standout Cunningham doesn’t show much of his value on the stat sheet.
It’s getting down and making those critical dirty plays on each of the floor that makes Cunningham so valuable and versatile for this Longhorns’ rotation. Cunningham is not likely to become a starter in the forward rotation for the Longhorns this coming season in the first year under Beard’s direction. But he could become more of an integral part of the rotation in other phases of the game.
Cunningham does have a good shooting stroke (despite his 24.5 percent three-point shooting mark in his career), and he just needs to capitalize on that. If Texas is able to more effectively space the floor for their forwards and centers this coming season than they have in years past under Smart, then Cunningham could be a direct benefactor.
The type of player that Cunningham is makes him one of the more switchable forwards in Beard’s arsenal. This type of undersized forward is one that has stood out in the past for Beard during his time as the Texas Tech head coach. And it makes him a potential player to watch to become a true forced to be reckoned with in the Big 12 this coming season.
