At this point of the offseason, the Texas football program and new head coach Steve Sarkisian have seemingly rounded out most of the roster. Texas stayed busy in the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason, both in terms of departures and losses. Roster attrition was sure to be a factor for Sark after getting hired as the next Texas head coach back on Jan. 2.

A complete change in coaching regime for the fourth time in the past decade is sure to result in some level of instability and roster turnover. But Sark and the Longhorns did a nice job of minimizing that aforementioned level of roster attrition so far this offseason.

There wasn’t really a transfer portal loss that the Longhorns had this offseason that really seemed ultra detrimental to this team right away. It was mostly NFL Draft departures that will cause the biggest voids for the Longhorns in 2021.

Steve Sarkisian could still find value for Texas football in the portal

Although most big names in the transfer portal are gone at this point in time, there’s still a handful of key targets to watch that could bring a lot of value to the table for Sark. Texas also looks like they still are remaining on contact with a few targets out of the portal post-spring ball.

And while it seems we are in the latter stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the college football landscape is starting to get back to some form of normal, a weird 2020 season is still going to cause chaos in the portal in the next couple of months.

More big names will appear in the portal this offseason, and Sark and his staff are likely to keep an active eye on what looms ahead. Here’s a look into five underrated transfer portal gems for the Longhorns to pursue to bolster the offense this summer.
