If the Longhorns wanted to look to more of the under-the-radar route to pursue a point guard out of the transfer portal, then look no further than the former UT-Arlington Mavericks floor general Sam Griffin. This former unrated recruit and Florida native Griffin was a stud coming out of Westminster High School back during the 2019 cycle.

But there were only three schools that wound up sending Griffin a scholarship offer. Those three were UT-A, the Arkansas State Red Wolves, and Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. And it was back on March 18 that Griffin put his name in the transfer portal. He has yet to find his next destination in the little over two months since then, but he could find a home in the near future.

Considering how thin the presence of depth is at the point guard position at the moment in the transfer portal, I’d be a big fan of the Longhorns looking into what Griffin brings to the table. He could be a solid find for them given how well he’s played for UT-A over the course of the last two seasons. And it’s not like he hasn’t faced high-level talent in that time either.

He got to face the likes of the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Tulsa Golden Hurricane last season. And the year before, he faced the Oregon Ducks, Gonzaga Bulldogs, Nevada Wolfpack, Tulsa, and the Houston Cougars.

Griffin is likely to land with another Division I school since he was so productive with the Mavericks in the last two seasons. In just over two dozen games played with UT-A last season, Griffin averaged 13.3 points per game, 2.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 0.7 steals, and no blocks. And he shot 40.5 percent from the field, 39.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 84.8 percent from the free-throw line.
