As previously mentioned, the Longhorns don’t have a plethora of depth at the point guard position to pursue in the portal at this point. But they could find some potential hidden talent in portal targets such as Griffin and the former South Florida Bulls three-star recruit and 6-foot-1 and 190 pound Chicago, IL, native Xavier Castaneda.

Like most of the guards on this list, it was back in March that Castaneda landed in the transfer portal. That’s when most players around the college hoops landscape put their name in the transfer portal if they landed there at any point early this offseason.

Texas has the ability to still capitalize on some of the talent that once lied in the portal in bunches this offseason. But they would have to turn to someone like the junior guard Castaneda if they aren’t able to get either Young or Carr at this point.

In 20 games played with USF last season, Castaneda averaged 8.5 points per game, 2.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 0.5 steals, and 0.1 blocks. And he shot 36.0 percent from the field, 38.7 percent from beyond the arc, and 88.1 percent from the free-throw line.

Texas does need to find a true starting point guard heading into next season, but Castaneda might not be that guy. He could fill more of a second or third unit role in the backcourt rotation in what would be his third season in college.
