A clear potential breakout candidate for the Longhorns in 2021 is the former five-star recruit and speedy and elusive redshirt sophomore wide receiver Jordan Whittington. The 6-foot-1 and 195 pound Cuero, TX, native and Cuero High School product showed a lot of promise for Texas at the skill positions when healthy in the past two years.

But the problem was exactly that. Whittington wasn’t able to remain consistently healthy for Herman and the Longhorns in his first two years on campus. Whittington only got to play in bits and pieces of six games in the last two seasons, which totaled up to just north of 150 snaps (all coming at wide receiver or running back).

If Whittington is able to stay healthy for the Longhorns this fall, then coaches like Sark and new offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood have proved in the past with the Alabama Crimson Tide that they can take the utility of a wideout’s game to the next level. Watch out for Whittington to improve both in the blocking and receiving game this fall if he’s able to stay mostly injury-free.

Texas does need someone with the elusiveness and overall explosiveness of Whittington to be able to open up the field in 2021. Whittington is the type of weapon that the Longhorns can give the ball to almost anywhere on the field, and he should be able to make things happen. He’s very tough to bring down in the open field.
