There is something special brewing in the defensive backfield for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class. And it’s not something to take lightly with how much this secondary can improve with the way they are getting results on the recruiting trail of late. One of the strongest position groups in the 2021 signing class for Texas was in the secondary.

And the Longhorns are not lagging behind in the secondary in their 2022 class either. New head coach Steve Sarkisian and defensive backs coach Terry Joseph are hitting the recruiting trail hard heading into official visit season. That’s not to mention the work that new safeties coach and former Texas defensive back Blake Gideon is doing on the trail of late too.

According to a report from Horns247 on May 28 (paid content), Texas is now “in contact with” a former three-star cornerback commit of head coach Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Underrated 5-foot-11 and 180 pound Southlake Carroll cornerback Avyonne Jones just announced he was decommitting from Oklahoma State on May 23.

There’s already a host of new schools targeting Jones heading into official visit season. While Jones does have a few official visits scheduled next month already, Texas could try and get him on the books in Austin at some point in the near future still. If they could find an open date for an unofficial visit, it would be big to get Jones to Austin.

The three official visits that Jones currently has scheduled come with the Arizona Wildcats (June 4), Wisconsin Badgers (June 17), and Louisville Cardinals (June 25). Texas might be able to still find a weekend this offseason where they can fit Jones in for an unofficial at least.

Texas hasn’t officially offered Jones yet, but that should be coming in the very near future if this type of traction continues. It sounds like the Longhorns could look into either playing Jones at cornerback or safety as an insurance policy to the depth they currently have in the 2022 class.

Some of the other big schools to watch in the race to now land a commitment from Jones include those he is visiting officially next month, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Oklahoma State, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Tennessee Volunteers.

Moreover, Jones ranks as the nation’s No. 987 2022 high school prospect, No. 96 cornerback, and No. 137 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 93 cornerback and No. 129 prospect out of Texas.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 9 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas holds eight commits in their 2022 class, with four-star Klein Cain running back Jaydon Blue as the highest-rated.
