Texas Softball: Horns can upset OK State to advance to WCWS
A huge meeting in super regionals between No. 12 ranked Texas softball and the No. 5 ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls on the diamond on the afternoon of May 30 his high stakes involved. Texas and Oklahoma State will be duking it out in the third straight game to decide who advances on to the Women’s College World Series.
In what will be a three-game set between Texas and Oklahoma State in softball this weekend, the Pokes got the win in the first leg. Then, Texas had a big comeback win on the afternoon/evening of May 29 to even up the series and keep their hopes alive to make it back to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, OK, next month.
To get to the super regional in Stillwater, OK, this weekend in the first place to face Oklahoma State, Texas had to knock off the Oregon Ducks out of the PAC-12 in the Austin regional. Texas fell short to the Cowgirls in the first game of this weekend series, back on May 28, by a score of 6-1.
But the fortunes for the Longhorns got better the following afternoon.
At the same time that the Longhorns baseball team was taking on Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Tournament this weekend in OKC, the softball team was trying to keep their hopes alive this postseason. And the softball team will be trying to do something that the baseball team could not, and actually move on.
Janae Jefferson hoping to keep Texas softball alive in quest to make the WCWS
Texas fell short in the Big 12 Tournament for men’s baseball this weekend in what amounted to a pretty disappointing set of four games. But the Longhorns softball team provided some hope for what’s to come with a late-game comeback win over Oklahoma State on May 30 in Stillwater, OK, by the final score of 4-1. Oklahoma State owned a 1-0 lead for most of the game, including heading into the bottom of the fifth.
A spark plug for the Longhorns on May 29 in their win over the Pokes was junior second-baseman and Humble, TX, native Janae Jefferson. Hitting a solid 2-of-3 at the plate in the second game in this weekend super regional series in Stillwater, Jefferson gave the Longhorns the game-tying run batted in.
Jefferson was also very good for the Longhorns defensively in their May 29 win. She will clearly be a player to watch for the women in burnt orange and white to round out the weekend in this meeting with Oklahoma State.
First pitch between Texas and Oklahoma State is set for 3:15 p.m. CT in Stillwater at Cowgirl Stadium. Texas will be looking to make their first appearance in the Women’s College World Series if they can knock off Oklahoma State this afternoon since 2013. It would also be the sixth WCWS appearance in program history.
