Texas Football: Murphy wants Evan Stewart back in the 2022 class
Over the weekend, a key four-star commit in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class, Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy, participated in the Steve Clarkson QB Retreat. This is one of the bigger non-Elite 11 recruiting events of the offseason for a quarterback prospect like Murphy.
And by all accounts, it was an impressive weekend for the Longhorns quarterback commit at the retreat. Murphy reportedly won the long ball contest at the event, with a whopping 79-yard throw at one point.
This was also not the first time that Murphy impressed scouts and the media at the Steve Clarkson QB Retreat. He’s performed well at this event on multiple occasions, even since his younger days as a middle school quarterback.
What was also notable about Murphy showing out at the retreat over the weekend was what he spoke on after the festivities. Murphy talked about other 2022 targets that he was helping recruit for the Longhorns. He specifically cited (per 247Sports) the five-star Bowie offensive guard Devon Campbell, five-star Summer Creek offensive tackle Kelvin Banks, and three-star Westlake offensive tackle Connor Robertson among those that he wanted to recruit to Texas.
4-Star Texas football QB commit Maalik Murphy wants 5-Star WR Evan Stewart “back in the boat”
What might be most noteworthy of all, though, was the fact that Murphy tabbed the five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver and former Texas commit Evan Stewart as one he wants back in the mix. That is clear, and it would be nice to have that wide receiver duo back in the 2022 class featuring Stewart and four-star Lewisville product Armani Winfield.
With Stewart set to visit Texas next month, it makes sense that Murphy is openly trying to recruit him back into the Longhorns 2022 class. Texas is one of the four schools that is set to host Stewart on an official visit in June. They’ll get Stewart to campus on June 11.
Murphy himself is set to have an official visit with Texas the weekend after Stewart. He specifically has his official visit with head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns on June 18.
Texas has a very important month looming for official visits in June. Sark and the Longhorns need a big month of June to get their momentum rolling back on the recruiting trail for their 2022 and 2023 classes.
This could be a big summer for the Longhorns, and a big piece of that could include getting a commitment back from Stewart. He ranks as the nation’s No. 34 2022 high school prospect, No. 3 wide receiver, and No. 9 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).
