A move that looked more and more realistic for Texas football junior linebacker and former four-star recruit Ayodele Adeoye came to fruition this week. Adeoye reportedly (per Horns247) withdrew his name from the NCAA Transfer Portal this week, and could be returning for new head coach Steve Sarkisian in the midst of summer workouts starting up.

Adeoye had his name in the transfer portal for a few months now, but no solid landing spot ever came up for him. Following the departure of former Texas head coach Tom Herman, and ex-defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash, it wasn’t a huge surprise that Adeoye put his name in the transfer portal in the first place.

Texas did have a lot of movement in the portal already this offseason.

This was one of multiple former Longhorns linebackers and defensive linemen that wound up in the transfer portal at some point this offseason. Texas also lost the likes of junior linebacker Juwan Mitchell, defensive end Marqez Bimage, and linebacker Byron Vaughns, to the portal among others.

What Texas is now getting back specifically with Adeoye potentially planning a return to the Forty Acres is 55 career combined tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, and two pass breakups. The 2019 season was Adeoye’s most productive, as he was often injured last fall.

There is the potential for Adeoye to resume getting significant snaps in the front seven for Texas this fall. He was solid for their linebacker corps two years ago and still has some promise left on the Forty Acres.

The main difference now is that Adeoye will have to compete for those aforementioned reps in fall camp and throughout the regular season. Texas brought in a multitude of linebacker additions out of the transfer portal, including former New Mexico State Aggies redshirt sophomore Devin Richardson, LSU Tigers senior Ray Thornton, and Alabama Crimson Tide senior Ben Davis.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the former head coach Herman. The defense will now be commanded by co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate in 2021.
