Another profound statement from a noted voice around the college football media landscape caught the eye of Longhorns fans alike this week. On ESPN’s morning show “Get Up” on June 2, SEC media personality and host of the “Paul Finebaum show” Paul Finebaum commented on his opinion on the state of the Texas football program in 2021.

As usual, Finebaum jumped the gun and largely polarized a situation that did not need his opinion thrown into the mix. Finebaum stated in this segment on ESPN’s Get Up that he does not believe the Longhorns are a relevant football team any longer.

He also noted that he thinks that the Longhorns essentially aren’t even comparable anymore to a football program like the Oklahoma Sooners. Given how Finebaum has commented on the Longhorns in the past, this isn’t really a surprising take from the well-known SEC homer.

Hire of Steve Sarkisian doesn’t make a difference for Paul Finebaum’s opinion of Texas football

It is notable that this sort of discussion is flying around the Big 12 and college football landscape as a whole at this point of the offseason. But clearly, it shouldn’t be something that new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns are worried about.

Even though Sark is the reigning Broyles Award winner and was the offensive coordinator for the defending National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide, that didn’t change Finebaum’s opinion on Texas.

We are likely to hear even more takes from Finebaum on Sark and the Longhorns throughout the remainder of the offseason, and on into the regular season. Texas fans are likely immune to the words that Finebaum has to say at this point.

Expectations will be set by more focused and unbias media sources that can give fans the proper anticipation for what lies ahead for Texas in 2021.

Texas does have reason for optimism this offseason, but the Big 12 still will present a difficult road ahead in 2021. Oklahoma will be a talented and deep team as usual. And the Iowa State Cyclones look to continue their quest as a Big 12 Title contender and dark horse to get a spot in the College Football Playoff this fall.

Last year, Texas finished up with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of their former head coach Tom Herman. It was back on Jan. 2 that Sark replaced Herman as the next Texas head coach.
