Texas Football: Xavier Worthy is already standing out in summer workouts
All eyes are on both official visits this month for the Texas football program and new head coach Steve Sarkisian along with the start of summer conditioning/workouts. It wasn’t all that long ago that Texas wrapped up spring ball (April 24), but summer workouts are already here and new additions to the program are getting instilled with the new culture on campus.
A focal point for Sark and the Longhorns in spring ball is definitely some of the summer enrollees from the 2021 recruiting class. One major emphasis for the Longhorns from the 2021 class is the former four-star Michigan Wolverines wide receiver commit and Central East product Xavier Worthy.
Texas was able to flip the commitment of Worthy from the Wolverines back in April, and he’s already on campus working out with the team in the summer months. He’ll have a lot of attention on him as the receiving corps looks to find some new playmakers in 2021.
Worthy could be a real deep threat thanks to his insane speed and elusiveness right away for Sark and the Longhorns. Sark’s offensive schemes were able to take the top off of opposing defenses in the SEC when he was the offensive coordinator of the Alabama Crimson Tide.
The hope is that he can do the same for the Longhorns given all of the young talent present in the wide receiver and quarterback rooms. Worthy could be a good place for Sark to build the offense around moving forward.
While it’s not very likely that the Longhorns have a passing game centered around Worthy right away, he could have an emerging role as a real playmaker in this receiving corps. Texas has a lot of speed at wideout with Worthy joining a mix that also includes Jordan Whittington, Jake Smith, Joshua Moore, etc.
That is a good thing for Sark heading into the fall.
Xavier Worthy a player to watch for Texas football in summer conditioning
According to a report from Horns247 on June 4 (paid content), Worthy is already one player to watch that is standing out above the rest of the new enrollees in summer workouts. Worthy is reportedly “as fast as advertised” for the Longhorns, which is a perfect fit with the Sark offense.
Texas is vying to replace a whole lot of departed talent in the receiving corps, which only encompassed really Brennan Eagles and Tarik Black, but there’s no firm star that can lead the way with this group. It could be a battle between the likes of Smith, Whittington, Moore, Troy Omeire, and even Worthy for who gets the most reps by the end of the coming season.
As a whole, Texas is going to have a lot of new faces stepping up this fall. Quarterback is likely to boil down to a battle between Hudson Card and Casey Thompson. The offensive line will have some turnover as offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi is gone to the NFL.
At least there is some stability at running back, with the duo of star Bijan Robinson and the versatile Roschon Johnson back in 2021.
Moreover, Worthy was a huge get for the Longhorns 2021 class. He was the top rated wide receiver signee and the second highest-rated prospect altogether. Worthy ranked as the nation’s No. 61 2021 high school prospect, No. 8 wide receiver, and No. 4 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite).
