After a busy weekend for the two main profit sports for the University of Texas, we can look ahead to what’s to come for the rest of the offseason on the Forty Acres. For the Texas basketball program, the addition out of the NCAA Transfer Portal over the weekend came in the form of the former Texas Tech Red Raiders junior shooting guard Avery Benson.

This is the fifth addition for new head coach (formerly of Texas Tech) Chris Beard out of the transfer portal so far this offseason. And there could be more to come in the near future.

Moreover, Benson was the first transfer addition for the Longhorns since Beard was hired to replace the departed Shaka Smart as head coach (which occurred back on April 1) from Texas Tech. Beard did manage to flip the commitment of the former Texas Tech four-star commit and John Paul II small forward Jaylon Tyson to the Longhorns 2021 class.

But in terms of a true addition to the program by way of the transfer portal, Benson is the first former Red Raider that Beard brought with him to Austin. He didn’t get the likes of former Texas Tech transfer guards Micah Peavy or Mac McClung to come to the Forty Acres as some (including myself) originally anticipated.

Texas now has well over half of the roster rounded out for the coming 2021-22 season, which is good news. And a lot of the additions out of the transfer portal thus far have already arrived on campus, and so has the 2021 signing class.

With that in mind, here’s a look at who the next transfer portal addition for the Longhorns could be after landing Benson this offseason.
