Texas Football: 5 players with a lot to prove in summer workouts
Daniel Young, RB
A new addition to the running back room for the Longhorns out of the transfer portal over the weekend will make it even more difficult for senior Daniel Young to get key reps this fall. Sark and the Longhorns got former Alabama sophomore running back Keilan Robinson out of the transfer portal last weekend, which will add to the bodies in front of Young on the depth chart at the position.
And given that Young opted out of last season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he’ll really have to prove what he can do with this new coaching staff this summer. Young needs to get his body right again for the upcoming 2021 season. He will have the advantage of being well-rested after not taking any hits last fall.
There will be advantages and downsides in 2021 for Young coming off a season where he opted out. Having the fresh legs in the backfield from Young will help give a new dynamic for Sark this fall. But he might have a harder time relying on Young in key situations since he wasn’t getting handoffs regularly in this offense since 2018.
It was a long time ago that Young and fellow former four-star recruit Toneil Carter were the hyped-up freshmen running backs on the Forty Acres. Young still has some eligibility left and will be looking to get a decent role in the running back room for Texas in 2021. Carter has now left Texas and is no longer on a Division I football roster.
