The hype train has already left the station (and it did a long time ago) for the former quarterback commit in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class Quinn Ewers. This elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback was committed to Texas in the 2022 class for a couple of months before he essentially flipped to join head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

It was back in August 2020 that the 6-foot-3 and 205 pound Southlake Carroll product and native of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex committed to the Longhorns and former head coach Tom Herman. But it took less than three full months for a nightmare scenario to arrive for Herman and the Longhorns, in which Ewers opened his recruitment back up.

Ewers would eventually take his talents to join Ohio State and commit to their 2022 class. He is now one of four five-star recruits that are currently committed in the 2022 class to Day and the Buckeyes.

Moreover, Ewers does rank as the nation’s top 2022 high school prospect in the 247Sports and Top247. He’s also tabbed as one of less than 10 prospects that have a 247Sports Composite ranking at a perfect 1.000. That’s something that not even the likes of former Clemson Tigers star quarterback Trevor Lawrence and former Ohio State and Georgia Bulldogs signal-caller Justin Fields received.

Former Texas football commit Quinn Ewers already getting NFL comps with Trevor Lawrence

In a recent 247Sports interview regarding the arm talent and NFL potential of Ewers this week, Greg Biggins talked about what makes him special. Here’s more on what he had to say on Ewers’ scouting report, specifically comparing the Southlake Carroll product to the former Clemson star Lawrence.

"But I will say this — from a pure throwing standpoint, Blair, from a pure throwing standpoint, it’s third-and-eight, I want a first down, I’m going to go with Quinn."

That is high praise for Ewers to already be getting comparisons that exceed that of the 2021 first overall NFL Draft pick. Lawrence was one of the more hyped-up recruits and NFL quarterback prospects of the past decade. It looks like Ewers is about to head down the same path.

Granted, it is way too early to be saying that Ewers is going to be a better NFL prospect than Lawrence. We have to see at least one full season of work from Ewers at the college level before putting any sort of official draft scouting projection on his ability.

Texas did get a quarterback back in their 2022 class following the decommitment of Ewers in the form of the potent four-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy. New Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian did a nice job of finding a signal-caller to build around in the 2022 clas after the decommitment of Ewers.
