What seemed to be one of the most critical remaining targets for new Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian in the NCAA Transfer Portal this offseason is no longer available. Texas wound up missing out on the former Tulsa Golden Hurricane redshirt junior 6-foot-2 and 190-pound cornerback Akayleb Evans in the midst of the summer months.

After a busy offseason in the transfer portal so far for Sark and the Longhorns, it did appear that the talented and proven defensive back Evans was one of the last targets available for this team. But Evans wound up deciding to take his talents to join the Longhorns former Big 12 foe Mizzou Tigers and head coach Eli Drinkwitz in the SEC East.

The announcement that Evans would be committing to Mizzou out of the transfer portal came on his Twitter timeline on the night of June 11. He chose to commit to Mizzou over competing schools like the TCU Horned Frogs, Georgia Bulldogs, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and Texas.

Texas football misses out on former Tulsa CB transfer Akayleb Evans to Mizzou

It appears that Mizzou was able to use a connection between Evans and their new secondary coach Aaron Fletcher to get a commitment from the Texas native cornerback. Evans decided to pass on returning to his home state of Texas in favor of joining the former Tulsa DB’s coach Fletcher in Columbia.

Now that Evans is off the board (who was supposed to be the final portal target for Sark this summer), Texas might want to turn elsewhere if they have any other voids to fill. With that in mind, here’s a look into four potential transfer portal targets to turn to next with Evans having committed to Mizzou entering the weekend.
