Bad news arrived for the 2023 Texas football recruiting class with the announcement on social media of the decommitment of what was the lone prospect in the mix. Texas lost their first and only commitment in the 2023 class on the morning of June 17, five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens.

Texas was rolling a few months back on the recruiting trail initially after the hiring of new head coach Steve Sarkisian. But volatility was bound to follow on the recruiting trail, which is something that has definitely ensued in the past four months. Texas has gained and lost two commitments among five-star skill position prospects since February alone in their 2022 and 2203 classes.

The first was the five-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart, who decommitted from Texas back in March, and Owens has delivered the same storyline this week. Texas is likely to find more stability on the recruiting trail in the next two or three months.

2023 Texas football recruiting class must look forward after losing Rueben Owens

And sustained success will follow if Sark and the Longhorns can find the right results in the win column this fall. There’s only so much that the Longhorns can do on the recruiting trail in terms of national prominence and success without the success in the win column during the actual season.

Nonetheless, it still won’t help any early momentum that Texas built in the 2023 class by losing the commitment of Owens. But there’s really nowhere to look but forward for Sark and the Longhorns at this point on the recruiting trail.

Here’s a look into three prospects that could wind up being the next initial commitment in the Longhorns 2023 class after losing Owens on June 17.
