Just one day away from the first game of the festivities in Omaha for the Texas baseball program and head coach David Pierce, the matchups look to be set. When No. 2 ranked Texas faces the No. 7 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs on the evening of June 20, there will clearly be a lot on the line for both teams to open up their runs in the College World Series.

Texas has all sorts of momentum coming off of their sweep of the American Athletic Conference Champion South Florida Bulls in the Austin Super Regional. Pierce and the Longhorns actually got through the entirety of the postseason thus far (at least excluding the Big 12 Tournament) unscathed.

Up to this point, the Longhorns downed the Fairfield Stags, Southern Jaguars, and Arizona State Sun Devils in the Austin Regional. And then they swept the two-game Austin Super Regional series against USF in commanding fashion.

The biggest challenge yet, though, has arrived for the Longhorns in the first game of the College World Series. Mississippi State got past the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a three-game series in the Starkville Super Regional.

Ty Madden will take the hill once again for Texas baseball vs. Mississippi State

In this meeting between Texas and Mississippi State to open up the College World Series, the pitching matchup will surely be a good one. Texas will have redshirt sophomore right-hander Ty Madden going up against right-hander Will Bednar for the Bulldogs.

Madden did not end up getting a decision in his start against USF in the Super Regional. Three runs surrendered by the Longhorns bullpen forced the no-decision for Madden in the opener of the Austin Super Regional.

Nonetheless, Madden comes into this game with a record of 7-4 and an earned run average of 2.41. Meanwhile, Bednar comes in with a record of 7-1 and an ERA of 3.53 on the season.

Texas as a team comes in with a record of 47-15, coming off their five straight wins in the Austin Regional and Super Regional. Mississippi State boasts a record of 45-16, and they will be looking to extend their winning streak to two games if they can upend Texas to open up the College World Series.
