Rueben Owens, RB

What more obvious way to start off a list like this than by mentioning the most recent decommit for Sark and the Longhorns. The Texas native Owens was the first commit initially in the Longhorns 2023 class, but that didn’t hold for all that long. Owens only stayed committed to Texas for roughly four months.

It is now up to Sark and his new coaching staff to find a new foundation to build the 2023 class around. While there’s no guarantee that Texas will be out on signing Owens when it’s all said and done, this is an obvious setback for the 2023 class. Owens was a very solid way for the Longhorns to start off the 2023 class, and they could still get his commitment back.

The 5-foot-11 and 190-pound Owens doesn’t have a clear destination in mind by most accounts at this point. He does now hold offers from 29 schools, though, including his from Texas. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet are the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.

Owens is also one of the most highly-rated prospects in the 2023 recruiting cycle coming out of high school. He ranks as the nation’s No. 24 2023 high school prospect, No. 2 running back, and No. 4 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 38 high school prospect, No. 2 running back, and No. 4 prospect out of Texas.

It’s going to take time for Sark and his staff to find stability on the recruiting trail, especially to lay a solid and consistent foundation for the 2023 class. Patience hopefully will win the day in this regard.
