One of the perils of Smith putting his name in the transfer portal this late in the offseason is the lack of ability to find a landing spot where he can make an immediate impact. A good portion of the wide receiver rooms around the college football landscape have figured out how things will start to shake out in fall camp.

Most programs have come close to finalizing their additions by way of the recruiting trail and the transfer portal to their roster for the year. But both Smith and the Longhorns had a setback in that process this week. Texas might have to move forward without one of their more proven slot receivers in 2021.

The Tennessee Volunteers seem like a potential match for Smith, considering there’s still a good amount of uncertainty present in that wide receiver room. Smight might be a steadying presence that could make an immediate impact for new head coach Josh Heupel and the Vols if he were to take his talents to Knoxville next.

Tennessee is vying to have a plethora of unproven wide receivers to be top targets for whoever the starting quarterback is this year. There’s not much that Heupel and the Vols have figured out on offense at this point. But Smith could definitely be a nice addition for them to a unit that includes Cedric Tillman, Jalin Hyatt, and Velus Jones Jr.
