The quest for new head coach Steve Sarkisian to find a second running back commit in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class could come to a head in the early afternoon of June 22. Sark and running backs coach Stan Drayton has a key target of the 2022 recruiting class that is set to announce his decision on June 22.

Fast-rising three-star Newton (TX) running back DeAnthony Gatson will be announcing his commitment on June 22. The 5-foot-10 and 200-pound Texas native Gatson has a few top schools vying for his commitment it seems, but the Longhorns look to sit among his frontrunners.

Gatson could be deciding between a trio of schools that includes the Colorado Buffaloes, USC Trojans, and Texas. The Iowa State Cyclones and Minnesota Golden Gophers looked to also sit among his top schools, but might not be in the mix at this point to land his pledge.

Texas had Gatson on campus for an official visit in the first weekend on the month. They did get the first word with Gatson when visits resumed this month around the college football recruiting landscape.

Where Texas football sits ahead of DeAnthony Gatson’s commitment?

He also had official visits with Colorado (June 18) and USC (June 11) in the past few weeks.

Texas was included in the five finalist schools that Gatson announced back in May. And then he later announced his decision date on his Twitter timeline back on the afternoon of June 14.

A lot of the leading indicators signal that it could boil down to just two schools for Gatson’s commitment. Of the five expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions in for Gatson ahead of his decision, two are going in favor of Texas and three to USC.

And the Rivals FutureCast has 75 percent of their analysts and publishers picking the commitment of Gatson to land with USC over Texas. The most recent of the FutureCast picks on Rivals went in favor of USC.

But the two most recent updates to the Crystal Ball Predictions on 247Sports actually had picks in for Texas. It is thoroughly confusing to figure out which school Gatson is leaning toward right now. The good news is that we can just wait a few hours to figure out where he’ll land.

Texas, Colorado, Iowa State, Minnesota, and USC, are five of the more than 15 schools on Gatson’s offer sheet. Some of the other notable schools he seemingly excluded from his commitment decision are the Baylor Bears, Houston Cougars, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, SMU Mustangs, South Carolina Gamecocks, TCU Horned Frogs, and Texas Tech Red Raiders.

Gatson ranks as the nation’s No. 474 2022 high school prospect, No. 38 running back, and No. 64 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 57 running back and No. 103 prospect out of Texas.

If Texas is able to get a commitment out of Gatson on June 22, it would be their second running back in the 2022 class. The lone running back commit at the moment in the Longhorns 2022 class is four-star Klein Cain product Jaydon Blue.
