Texas Baseball: Miss. St. game pushed back after NCSU vs. Vandy
In yet another win-or-go-home game for No. 2 ranked Texas baseball in the College World Series in Omaha this week, they’ll need to come up with some revenge against the No. 7 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs. The goal for head coach David Pierce and Texas is to avoid letting a loss to Mississippi State be both the beginning and end of the 2021 season.
It all started a few months back for the Longhorns with a loss to Mississippi State, and their first game in Omaha last weekend resulted in a defeat at the hands of the same squad. Texas looked really good in the two games since the loss to Mississippi State last weekend. They knocked off the No. 3 ranked Tennessee Volunteers to stay alive in Omaha back on June 22.
And then late in the night of June 24, the Longhorns came up with a huge win over the No. 6 ranked Virginia Cavaliers by the final score of 6-2. That win over Virginia came after nearly a four-hour-long weather delay in Omaha. It was incredible to see the way that redshirt freshman right-hander Pete Hansen and the Longhorns took care of business after such a long delay against the Hoos.
Ty Madden and Texas baseball looking for revenge vs. Mississippi State
The team that has already taken down the Longhorns multiple times this season is now looking to send them back to Austin on the night of June 25. Mississippi State will come into this key matchup with Texas heading into the weekend with a long bit of rest since their last game.
Mississippi hasn’t played a game in more than 48 hours. Meanwhile, it was less than 20 hours ago that Texas sent Virginia back to Charlottesville.
On the mound for the Longhorns on June 25 against the Bulldogs is redshirt sophomore right-hander Ty Madden. Looking for his eighth win of the season, and his first in Omaha, Madden will be on the mound for the second time against Mississippi State. Madden was good for the Longhorns in seven innings of work against Mississippi State last time around.
But that wasn’t enough as Mississippi State topped Texas by just a one-run margin back on June 20.
The original time for the first pitch between Texas and Mississippi State was set for 6 p.m. CT. But that will now come at 6:50 p.m. CT thanks to the delay in the meeting between the NC State Wolfpack and Vanderbilt Commodores. NC State had some COVID-19-related issues arise before their game against Vandy, causing the delayed start time with them.
Texas is getting used to delayed start times in the past 24 hours, so maybe they can come out juiced up for this one the way they did the night before. There was only one inning where the Longhorns weren’t leading the Hoos on June 24, and early in the morning of June 25. A similar effort could push Mississippi State to the brink on this night.
Madden and the Longhorns come into this game with a record of 49-16 following their four-run win over Virginia on June 24. Meanwhile, Mississippi State comes in with a record of 47-16 following their two wins in Omaha thus far over Texas and Virginia.
If Texas can beat Mississippi State twice this weekend, then they’ll face the winner of the final game between NC State and Vandy on June 26. Mississippi State needs just one more win over Texas to move on to face the winner of NC State and Vandy.
