Texas Football: ESPN reflects on Tom Herman headbutting player helmets
Former Texas football head coach Tom Herman made plenty of interesting headlines during his time on the Forty Acres. But one of the more interesting moments he had during his time as Texas head coach came back during the 2019 season when he was seen headbutting helmeted players before the matchup with the Baylor Bears
ESPN published a piece this week discussing the times where head coaches were caught on camera headbutting helmeted players. And the first coach shown in the reel from this ESPN piece was Herman prior to the game against Baylor.
Here’s the brief part to note from this piece from ESPN on June 23 that mentioned Herman as head coach of the Longhorns.
"There’s former Texas coach Tom Herman, who delivered the rare triple head-butt to get his team fired up before its 2019 showdown with Baylor. The move caused no real damage to Herman’s skull, but the Longhorns lost 24-10."
Ex-Texas football HC Tom Herman has weird pre-game ritual revived by ESPN
This was the sole time that we saw Herman headbutting helmeted players during some type of a pre-game ritual during his time as the Longhorns head coach. He was Texas head coach over the span of four seasons, stretching from 2017-2020.
Texas parted ways with Herman back on Jan. 2 for the former Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator/reigning Broyles Award winner Steve Sarkisian. Herman rounded out his tenure as Texas head coach with a record of 32-18 (.640 winning percentage). And the Longhorns finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under Herman’s direction.
There were plenty of memorable moments for the Longhorns under Herman in the past four years. Unfortunately, there seems to be just as many good as there are bad at this point.
Texas is about to head into their first season with Sark as the head coach. They open up the 2021 regular season at home on Sep. 4 against Louisiana. And Herman was hired a few months back with the Chicago Bears as an offensive analyst/special projects coach.
