In a critical game that helped to keep the season alive for No. 2 ranked Texas baseball late in the night of June 25/early in the morning of June 26, there were more ninth-inning fireworks. Texas has often got the bats going late in games in the College World Series thus far.

In a win over the No. 6 ranked Virginia Cavaliers back on June 24, head coach David Pierce saw his Longhorns get three runs scored in the ninth inning thanks to a three-run double from Zach Zubia. That got Texas the key 6-2 win two nights back over the Hoos, which sent them back to Charlottesville.

Zubia also raked for the Longhorns again in their 8-5 win over the No. 7 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs early in the morning of June 26. He got the first home run of the game for Texas, which also scored the first run of the game for either team.

That home run for Zubia on June 25 was his 11th of the season, and the 30th of his college baseball career with the Longhorns. He’s also got well over 160 career runs batted in for the Longhorns at this point of his career.

Zach Zubia and Ty Madden powering Texas baseball in Omaha

But it wasn’t only Zubia that was big for Texas thus far in Omaha. Redshirt sophomore right-hander Ty Madden was really good for Texas in their three-run win over Mississippi State entering the weekend.

In that win over Mississippi State to begin the weekend, Madden wound up reaching a milestone, with 137 strikeouts with Texas. this season. That is the most since the former Longhorn stud pitcher JP Howell more than 15 years ago.

It was largely the arm of Madden that helped to get the Longhorns past the Bulldogs. He’s had two solid efforts on the mound for Texas in Omaha thus far, although that only resulted in one win.

What’s more impressive for Madden and Zubia is how they’ve led this team the past few seasons. While last season ended early, each led the Longhorns in at least three key statistical categories in their own right. Zubia will likely wind up leading the team in RBIs this season when it’s all said and done.

And Madden will crack the top 10 in school history for single-season strikeouts in all likelihood if he gets one more start in the College World Series. He leads the team by a good margin in strikeouts this season.
