Texas Football: Jaylon Guilbeau ‘standing firm’ on commitment after OV
As the final visit weekend wraps up for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class, a lot of the focus lies on what will happen from top targets in the coming weeks. But Texas still must keep an emphasis on holding together current commits in the 2022 class. Texas had the status of some of their top commits in both the 2022 and 2023 classes brought to the forefront in the past few months.
The decommitment of five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens in the Longhorns 2023 class was a big setback, granted one that new head coach Steve Sarkisian should be able to recover from. Still, Texas needs a strong response on the recruiting trail throughout the rest of the summer to head into the fall on the right foot.
In that aforementioned final weekend of big-time visitors that the Longhorns hosted for June before the dead period returns, there were some very notable names on campus. One was a current commit of the Longhorns 2022 class that had some whispers that he could explore other options this offseason.
Importance of keeping the commitment of Jaylon Guilbeau in the 2022 Texas football recruiting class
Four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau is the longest remaining commit in the 2022 class. While he wasn’t the first commit in this class, he is the initial one along the remaining prospects in this group.
Among any current commits that visited Texas in the last week, Guilbeau’s was the most notable. Given any rumors of him keeping his options open this summer made it so that this official visit in Austin was crucial for this staff.
According to a report from Horns247 last weekend (paid content), Guilbeau is “standing firm” on his commitment to Texas after what sounds to be a successful official visit. That is good news for Texas, but it doesn’t mean that he’s completely locked in and that this coaching staff can relax from here on out.
Guilbeau also had unofficial visits prior to his OV with Texas this month with the rival Texas A&M Aggies and the TCU Horned Frogs. The Alabama Crimson Tide could also be a competing program to watch on the recruiting trail moving forward with the Port Arthur, TX, native.
Texas originally landed the commitment of Guilbeau back in September 2020. He also holds offers from the likes of the Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, Tennessee Volunteers, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and USC Trojans.
