If the Longhorns are going to fill the wide receiver depth lost to the transfer portal this offseason, then it could start out with someone that is more experienced like Smalling or the former USC Trojans and Illinois senior wideout Trevon Sidney. But Smalling is the more productive of these two former Fighting Illini wideouts.

Sidney had his college football debut in the same season as Smalling. But the steady production just wasn’t there at any point for the former talented four-star recruit and USC wideout Sidney like it was for Smalling from 2017-2019. The best season individually for Sidney to date came in 2019 with the Fighting Illini. That’s what made it look like Illinois was the spot for him.

In 2019, Sidney registered 16 catches for 123 receiving yards (7.7 yards per catch) and one touchdown. That still wasn’t all that productive of a season for Sidney.

But the departure of Lovie earlier this offseason for the former Arkansas Razorbacks head coach Bielema looks to be the deciding factor for Sidney putting his name in the transfer portal for the second time in his college career to date.

Next. 3 commits Sark could get this week. dark

Texas would be getting more of a potent project as an upperclassman that looks to still have two years of eligibility remaining in his college career if they got a commitment from Sidney. He would be similar to the risk that Sark and the Longhorns took on by getting former Alabama linebacker Ben Davis out of the transfer portal this offseason.
