As the visit season went on last month around the college football recruiting landscape, many fans forgot about the ongoing summer workouts for the Texas football program. Just a few weeks ahead of the start of fall camp on the Forty Acres, Texas, and new head coach Steve Sarkisian are fully ramped up in summer workouts.

This is the last leg of the offseason for the Longhorns’ current roster at hand before fall camp gets going. And it is worth paying attention to which Longhorns players are standing out during summer conditioning and getting a leg up heading into fall camp.

One of the more hotly discussed players in the midst of summer workouts this offseason is the former Michigan Wolverines four-star wide receiver commit and Central East High School product Xavier Worthy. Texas managed to flip the commitment of and sign Worthy around the conclusion of spring camp.

Texas experienced some turnover in the receiving corps this offseason, making way for a more clear path forward for the incoming freshman Worthy to make an immediate impact. This receiving corps has lost the likes of junior wide receiver Jake Smith, former junior Brennan Eagles, senior Tarik Black, and redshirt sophomore Malcolm Epps, all this offseason.

Xavier Worthy making a real impression for Texas football this summer

The good news here is that Worthy has done well for the Longhorns by all indications since he arrived on campus this offseason. According to a report from Horns247 on July 9 (paid content), Worthy might be the “most impressive” Longhorns player individually through summer conditioning and 7-on-7 drills of late.

Worthy arrived on the Forty Acres ahead of the start of summer workouts, but he missed spring ball since he was still committed to Michigan at the time.

This is a great sign for Sark and second-year wide receivers coach Andre Coleman that the true freshman Worthy is stepping up in the spotlight this offseason. They need some new faces to step up in this receiving corps. And Worthy could be on the cutting edge of this new wave of Texas wideout talent, which could also feature redshirt freshman Troy Omeire.

What Texas got out of flipping the commitment of Worthy from Michigan is the nation’s No. 61 2021 high school prospect, No. 8 wide receiver, and No. 4 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 99 high school prospect, No. 13 wide receiver, and No. 8 prospect out of California.

Texas finished up last season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12) under the direction of the former head coach Tom Herman. New head coach Sark and the Longhorns are set to open up the 2021 regular season on Sep. 4 at home against Louisiana.
