Texas football putting itself among the leaders for 4-Star DL Hero Kanu
A big month for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class thus far has calmed down a bit for the last 10 days. Granted, it was hard to match the pace at which decisions were coming out for top targets of the 2022 class for Texas during the first week of the dead period. Texas landed a trio of commitments in the first week of the dead period alone. Two of those commits were also from blue-chip recruits.
Most of the attention now, though, on the recruiting trail for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns falls on what lies ahead for the rest of the summer for the 2022 class. Texas is in the midst of a quieter period in July in terms of commitments, at least compared to the first week of the dead period. But we are starting to see a good number of key targets of the 2022 class whittle down some of their top schools heading into the fall.
And with some of the prospects that the Longhorns missed of late, the big board at certain key positions of need shifts. That opens up the opportunity for someone like the touted four-star Santa Margarita Catholic (CA) defensive lineman Hero Kanu to get top priority from this coaching staff on the recruiting trail.
At the moment, the top of the big board for the Longhorns among defensive linemen foe the 2022 class looks to be Kanu and four-star Bremond product Jaray Bledsoe. Kanu and Bledsoe would each be solid additions to the 2022 class, alongside fellow four-star defensive lineman and Texas commit Kristopher Ross.
4-Star DL Hero Kanu a key part of the plans of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class
According to a report from Horns247 on July 13 (paid content), Kanu is quickly becoming a top target for the Longhorns 2022 class. Texas has really inserted itself in the thick of the race to land a commitment from Kanu. Although it will continue to be an uphill battle to fend off some of the top competitors for Kanu, the progress that this coaching staff has already made with him is significant.
Getting Kanu back to campus for an official visit this fall is the way forward to effectively recruit Kanu. The two schools that currently have official visits on the books with Kanu are the Oklahoma Sooners and Ohio State Buckeyes. But considering Kanu didn’t use any of his official visits last month, Texas could still occupy one of the three remaining that he has.
The key relationship that Kanu has built with Texas came courtesy of co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Pete Kwiatkowski. The west coast connection could pay dividends with this California defensive lineman.
Kanu is one of multiple blue-chip recruits to watch through the rest of the summer months. He is also one of the higher-rated defensive linemen at the top of the board for Texas. He ranks as the nation’s No. 82 2022 high school prospect, No. 13 defensive lineman, and No. 9 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 99 high school prospect, No. 13 defensive lineman, and No. 10 prospect out of California.
