The first name up on this list is the other big guard addition for Beard and the Longhorns out of the transfer portal this offseason. The former five-star recruit and Kentucky Wildcats freshman guard Devin Askew was also just one of the first big portal additions in general for Beard and the Longhorns after his April 1 hiring.

Askew won’t be as much of an immediate impact type of guard as he could be more of a long-term potent play for Texas. He had some solid showings during his true freshman campaign with head coach John Calipari at Kentucky. But it’s nothing compared to what Carr could likely do for the Longhorns out of the gates this season.

The good news for Askew in this regard is that he can now slow down and focus on his development a bit more than he would’ve been able to otherwise. He can learn behind Carr this season, while still likely holding a significant role in the backcourt rotation.

There was a chance, though, that Askew was going to find himself in the starting five if not for landing Carr this weekend. And if Askew shows that he’s ready to step up in the spotlight, then he can earn that spot moving forward.

Askew and Morris are going to be some of the more important guards for the future of this program, while Carr and the next name up on this list are crucial to the success now.

Beard and the Longhorns can now use Askew for more of his known strengths. He’s a very underrated on-ball defender, a good facilitator, smooth primary ball-handler in transition, and a surprisingly good rebounder.
