Another quality candidate for the Longhorns to find a backup center this summer would be the former SMU Mustangs and Oklahoma State Cowboys big man Yor Anei. Both Anei and Smith could join Texas with the idea that they would start the season with a reserve role. And that could very likely hold true throughout the entirety of next season.

Anei was mostly in the starting five during his two seasons playing for head coach Mike Boynton and the Pokes. But in just under a dozen games played last season at SMU, Anei only started one time. He also averaged a career-low 17.4 minutes per game.

Nonetheless, Anei brought some quality production to the table in his two seasons with the Pokes, and one with the Mustangs. He’s registered a stellar 111 career offensive rating, 98 defensive rating, 3.9 box plus/minus, .140 win shares per 40 minutes, 5.6 total win shares, 58.7 true shooting percentage, and 19.9 player efficiency rating.

It was pretty surprising to see Anei’s name pop up in the transfer portal this offseason when it looked like he would see a nice jump in his role and overall playing time with SMU next season.

Anei could continue to work his way up the rotation with the Longhorns. He still has two years of eligibility remaining in his college career, so he could make some valuable short-term contributions on the Forty Acres. He is familiar with the level of competition in the Big 12 from his time at Oklahoma State and still performed well in a more limited role with SMU last season.
