An interesting approach is being taken by new Texas football head coach Steve Sarkisian to the looming quarterback competition heading into fall camp. Texas had one of the more high-profile quarterback battles around the college football landscape since the start of spring ball. The departure of former star senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger by way of the 2021 NFL Draft opened the door for this battle to happen in the first place this offseason.

This looming quarterback battle for Sark and the Longhorns has taken place between the likes of redshirt junior Casey Thompson and sophomore Hudson Card. Those two are likely both set to get a decent amount of reps in game action this fall. But who will be the opening week starter is yet to be known.

And according to a report from Inside Texas, Sark wants these quarterbacks “to make this decision as hard” as it can be on him. He’s truly investing in both of these quarterbacks to see who will be the best fit with his new offensive scheme as there’s currently no clear frontrunner to win the starting job.

Texas football HC Steve Sarkisian taking it down to the wire between Casey Thompson and Hudson Card?

Thompson would likely be the presumed favorite by most Texas fans at the moment. He has the most relevant game experience, including an incredibly efficient four-touchdown showing in the Alamo Bowl win over the Colorado Buffaloes to conclude last season.

But it’s hard to argue that Card isn’t the more talented of the two. He was the higher-rated recruit and has the more polished arm from what we’ve seen so far.

All of what we saw in any game action, though, from either Card or Thompson came under former head coach Tom Herman and often former offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. This offense under Sark will have a completely different feel to it.

Card and Thompson could have this battle extend well into fall camp. And that’s what it looks like Sark wants to happen ahead of the regular season opener. Sark and the Longhorns are set to open up the regular season slate on Sep. 4 against Louisiana.
