Texas Football: 3 Big 12 teams that should also leave for the SEC
Texas Tech
This spot on the list was one that was pretty difficult to find an answer for. Since this list comes in no particular order, it is also the one that should be most up for debate. This is even considering that the SEC would want to take on four teams from the Big 12 instead of just two.
But the final spot on this list goes to the Texas Tech Red Raiders nonetheless. If you consider the athletic program as a whole and the overall brand, then Texas Tech could make more sense for the SEC over other programs like the Baylor Bears and TCU Horned Frogs. And it would be hard to place a football program as bad as the one the Kansas Jayhawks have in the SEC.
While it would be nice to get the rivalry back between Kansas and Mizzou, the bad football program would be too much of an anchor to want to bring them into the SEC.
Moreover, Texas Tech at least has a decent football history, wider-spanning fan base, along with good basketball and baseball programs. In some of those categories, Texas Tech could fit quite well in the SEC. It is also a public school that tends to carry a wider-spanning fan base geographically than the likes of TCU or Baylor.
Really the other valid options here would be the West Virginia Mountaineers, and that school seems like a better fit with the ACC than it does the SEC. West Virginia was part of the old Big East Conference when it still had schools competing in FBS football. But that has disintegrated since.
All things considered, Texas Tech could make sense as the last of the four hypothetical additions from the Big 12 to the SEC.
