Jimbo Fisher warns Texas football, OU about joining the SEC
One of the biggest opposition parties to the wanting of the likes of the Texas football program and Oklahoma Sooners to join the SEC thus far is obviously the Texas A&M Aggies. You would expect Texas A&M to oppose those two schools leaving the Big 12 for the SEC more so than just about anyone else.
Two of the more notable Aggies that spoke out on the matter of Texas and Oklahoma potentially joining the SEC were Texas A&M athletic director Ross Bjork and football head coach Jimbo Fisher. Bjork mentioned that he essentially wants the Aggies to be the only school in the state of Texas in the SEC.
And Fisher issued a “warning” at SEC Media Days this week stating that you should “be careful what you ask for if you jump in this league” hinting at what could be to come if Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC. It was an interesting statement from Fisher on this matter of Texas and Oklahoma potentially leaving the Big 12.
Jimbo Fisher warns Texas football, OU, about the challenges of the SEC
Texas A&M had a moderate amount of success since joining the SEC. But Fisher and the Aggies just had the best season since joining the SEC in 2020. Texas A&M was one step shy of making it to the College Football Playoff last season, finishing up with a record of 9-1 (8-1 SEC West).
Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC would be more than just about football success. The money involved with this move could be insane with two of the biggest powers that be around the college sports landscape in general (not just football) moving from one power conference to another.
And as time moves along, it looks like Texas and Oklahoma are looking more and more assured of leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. We will continue to monitor this ongoing storyline to see what else develops with Texas and Oklahoma potentially going to the SEC.
If Texas and Oklahoma were to join the SEC, it would bring the total number of teams in the conference up to 14. That would also bring the number of original Big 12 schools in the SEC up to four, with the likes of the Mizzou Tigers, Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M, all in the mix.
