Some of the bigger news of the day in terms of the idea that the Texas football and Oklahoma Sooners could bolt from the Big 12 for the SEC involved media contracts. Texas and Oklahoma notified the Big 12 this week that the two schools would not intend to re-up on the media contracts, which run out in 2025.

More big news dropped on the evening of July 22 that Texas and Oklahoma did not attend the Big 12 league call on this day. With Texas and Oklahoma missing out on that call amid this media firestorm with them considering the move from the Big 12 to the SEC, there’s more reason to believe that there are wheels in motion to try and make this happen right now.

Media rights holding up the deal for Texas football and OU to go to SEC?

According to a report from Horns247 on July 22, the idea is that Texas and Oklahoma would not leave the Big 12 until 2025 when the media rights agreement expires. Another part of this Horns247 report is that Texas and Oklahoma would give the Big 12 time to figure out a plan in the wake of them leaving for the SEC.

Either way you look at it, this is going to be an awkward situation on the field for the Longhorns on Sooners this fall. Texas and Oklahoma obviously aren’t going to be playing in the SEC in 2021. And while there is still the possibility that something could get worked out to leave the Big 12 before 2025, this seems like the target timeline at the moment by most indications.

The likely scenario would be for Texas and Oklahoma to push to make the move to the SEC before 2025. But it’s hard to really see anything happening before 2023. Texas and Oklahoma both have schedules set for next season, and that would give logistics for this scenario less than 15 months to figure out the athletic calendar.
