A magical run for the Texas baseball program last season rounded out just shy of the College World Series Final in Omaha last month. Texas and head coach David Pierce fell one game, and really just one inning, shy of getting to the final round of the College World Series to face the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Instead, it was another team that knocked out Pierce and the Longhorns to finish out the special run in Omaha in the upstart Mississippi State Bulldogs. In fact, it was Mississippi State that would start and end last season for Texas.

Moreover, it looks like the team the Longhorns bring back next season could be even more potent than the one this year. Texas is getting a number of key players back for next season, such as starting pitcher Tristan Stevens, infielder Trey Faltine, first baseman Ivan Melendez, relief pitcher Cole Quintanilla, etc.

Texas is already getting the type of hype that a National Championship contender does for the 2022 season. In Baseball America’s “Never Too Early” top 25 that was released on July 23, Texas took to the top spot ahead of the likes of Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Baseball America buying into the hype for Texas baseball in 2022

It’s not out of the question that Baseball America has Texas ranked as the early top team for the 2022 college baseball season. Texas brings back an insanely talented team that was very close to winning a title with Pierce at the helm this year.

Texas finished up the 2021 season with a record of 50-17 (17-7 Big 12). Although Pierce and the Longhorns fell short of winning the Big 12 Tournament, the program would win the conference’s regular season title.

It looks to be a very exciting time on the Forty Acres with the Longhorns baseball program likely contending nationally next year. The football and men’s basketball programs will also have a lot of excitement surrounding them heading into next season, as both are breaking in new head coaches.
