This news did not take too long to come down for the Texas football program and Oklahoma Sooners. According to a report from Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports on the morning of July 23, Texas and Oklahoma are anticipated to inform the Big 12 by the morning of July 26 that the two schools intend to leave the conference.

But this report from CBS Sports also notes that this decision from Texas and Oklahoma to leave the Big 12 could come in a window of the next 24-48 hours at the soonest.

Here’s more on what this report has to say on the matter of the Longhorns and Sooners informing the Big 12 about the intention to leave.

"“I’m not saying it’s 100%, but it’s close to it in terms of being a done deal,” a Big 12 source intimately involved in the process told CBS Sports.“It could be as soon as 24-48 hours and as long as two weeks before we have any clarity in terms of timing,” said the source in reference to when Texas and Oklahoma would expect to formally join the SEC.If the programs were to effort an SEC debut in 2022, each could owe up to $80 million to the Big 12 as a penalty for leaving before the current TV rights contract expires after the 2024-25 season. That total equals the combined revenue distribution per school of the last two years."

A report from Chip Brown of Horns247 also noted the move from the Longhorns to leave the Big 12 along with the Sooners in a window as soon as this weekend. Both reports note sources from the Big 12 that expect this move to come from Texas and Oklahoma in the very near future.

Texas football and Oklahoma leaving the Big 12 happening sooner than expected

Both of these reports do mention the TV rights/media rights agreement that both schools have with the Big 12 that runs up in 2025. That seemed to be an original target date mentioned this week for when the two schools could try and leave the Big 12 for the SEC officially.

And while the two schools intend to notify the Big 12 of them leaving the conference very soon, this doesn’t mean that an agreement will come to terms with the SEC in the same span of time. Getting a deal done with the SEC is a completely different matter for the Longhorns and Sooners.

This is one of the fastest moving storylines that we’ve ever seen concerning this consequential of conference realignment. It will continue to shake up the Big 12 and the college sports landscape as a whole.

dark. Next. Who would hurt the most in the Big 12 without Texas and OU

Texas and Oklahoma look fully intent on leaving the Big 12 at this point, even if it doesn’t wind up being with the SEC. Granted, that looks to be the main target at hand for the two schools. We will continue to monitor this storyline as it keeps developing in the coming hours, days, and weeks.
