Texas Football: Sarkisian unlikely to sway commitment of Quinn Ewers
Turning the attention away from the rampant talk of the potential for the Texas football program to leave the Big 12, along with the Oklahoma Sooners, for the SEC and back to the 2022 recruiting class, there’s still a lot going on to round out the month of July. Texas saw plenty of movement on the recruiting trail in the past few months for the 2022 class mainly.
A constant storyline involving both the Longhorns and Ohio State Buckeyes is the recruitment of the nation’s top 2022 prospect, five-star Southlake-Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers. Texas originally landed a commitment from Ewers in August 2020, but later lost it less than two months later.
Just after decommitting from Texas, the Dallas-Fort Worth product Ewers wound up giving his commitment to Ohio State on Nov. 19. Ewers is now the staple of the Buckeyes 2022 recruiting class for head coach Ryan Day.
According to a report from Horns247 this week (paid content), Texas likely would’ve made some headway in retaining the commitment of Ewers had new head coach Steve Sarkisian been at the helm sooner. The instability surrounding former Texas head coach Tom Herman had a lot to do with the decommitment of Ewers, and the inability to flip him back in the time since.
The 2022 Texas football recruiting class unlikely to sway 5-Star QB Quinn Ewers
Ewers reportedly likes the combination of Sarkisian and new quarterbacks coach AJ Milwee, but that doesn’t sound like it will be nearly enough for Texas to get him back. Plus, as is always mentioned in any Ewers conversation, Texas is still good at quarterback in the 2022 class.
Sark and the Longhorns did well to respond to the lack of quarterback stability in the 2022 class back in the winter months, by landing a commitment from four-star Junipero Serra signal-caller Maalik Murphy. At this point, Murphy is the highest-rated commit in the Longhorns 2022 class.
Texas originally had the combination of Herman and former offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich going after Ewers. It sounds like Texas will be better off recruiting top-tier quarterbacks with the combination of Milwee and Sark now.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 10 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas is now down to 14 commits following the decommitment of four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau on July 21.
