Texas Tech

The impact that the Longhorns had on the Texas Tech Red Raiders basketball program this offseason is untold. There was movement in the NCAA Transfer Portal between Texas and Texas Tech at times. But the main headline was Texas hiring the former Texas Tech head coach Chris Beard to replace Shaka Smart back on April 1.

Beard and the Longhorns now sit in a great position to have the most talented and the deepest roster in the Big 12 next season. Texas also could have one of the four or five best rosters in the entire country after the good work that Beard did in the transfer portal in the past few months.

Moreover, Texas Tech could still stay well above water in men’s hoops following the hire of Mark Adams to be the next head coach. We’ll just have to wait and see how that plays out.

Texas Tech is going to be hurt, though, by the departure of Texas and Oklahoma from the Big 12. This is a valuable athletic program as a whole, largely thanks to the rise to prominence of the basketball program in the past decade. But it’s hard to find where the Red Raiders could land next in the midst of this round of conference realignment.

Texas Tech fans were likely also looking forward to sticking around in the Big 12 to try and exact revenge on Beard and the Longhorns. And while the Red Raiders will still get the shot to spoil the party for Beard and the Longhorns next season, that might be the only year where these two programs will remain in the same conference.
