Texas basketball ex Jaxson Hayes in headlines for reported arrest and hospitalization this week
Hayes had a solid first two seasons in his NBA career with the Pelicans. Coming out of the Longhorns basketball program, Hayes was the eighth pick in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft of the Atlanta Hawks. But Hayes was later traded on draft night 2019 to the Pelicans namely along with Nickeil Alexander-Walker in a deal that landed De’Andre Hunter in Atlanta.
Putting up some very efficient numbers with the Pelicans in the last two seasons, Hayes is considered a key part of the young core around the star forward duo of Brandon Ingram and Zion Williamson. He’s averaged 7.4 points per game, 4.2 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.4 steals, and 0.8 blocks, in 124 regular season games played with the Pelicans in the last two seasons.
Hayes only spent one season with the Longhorns under former head coach Shaka Smart. He went on to nab All-Big 12 Second-Team honors, the 2018-19 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, and Big-12 All-Defensive Team honors, during his true freshman campaign at Texas.
Moreover, Hayes is about to enter his third year in the NBA with the Pelicans. His offseason arrived early with the Pelicans missing out on the postseason yet again this year.
We’ll monitor this storyline as it continues to develop this week.
